Moon Time, Part 1

That one time that all women see as a delicate one is when the menstruation starts. It is actually a delicate subject for both, men and women. So let’s take a closer look, from the perspective of energy, femininity and Vedic knowledge, that I appreciate so much.

What is menstruation?

On a physical level, it is the time of month when woman’s body gets rid of toxins through blood, together with the unfertilized egg. So, it is basically a pure cleansing. On a subtle energetic level is it actually the same exact process – releasing of all energetic toxins and dirt, or negative energy. Hence why in so many different traditions and religions woman is considered “not pure” during this time, and is expected to retreat somewhere else, away from everyone and everything.

According to Vedas, every moon week (the week of one moon month, which is about 29-30 moon days) there is a new Goddess that resides in woman’s body: Saraswati, Durga, Lakshmi and Kali. If you know a little bit of Vedic Goddesses, you may be able to guess which one comes when we are menstruating. It is definitely a week of Kali – a Goddess of destruction and purification.

Not only you yourself may feel like you are Kali during that time. People around you usually notice that pretty good, especially beloved men. When Kali comes, the process of great cleansing starts. Our psyche becomes out of balance, we become emotionally unstable. We basically live through the time of emotional and psychological volcano. This happens because with menstruation we are being cleansed from everything that we have accumulated throughout the past month – all our stress and emotions that were not released. The more painful those days are, the more stress you had that month, and the more pain you accumulated in your body.

This time is very crucial for women. Because we are going through a period of purification, it is extremely important to let nature and our bodies do the job. We have to support the process by not inhibiting anything because the next month will depend on that. If we spend our special time correctly during these days, we will have more energy, we will be calmer and more harmonious during the next month.

So what are the things we should be doing and should avoid doing during our moon time?

What to do during Moon time

♦ The best thing you can do is really do NOTHING. That’s right. A complete and absolute rest. It is very very beneficial to plan rest during that time, and preferably completely alone. The process of purification we go through is very intimate and even sacred, so there should be as less people involved as possible. See it as a super secret ritual you perform.

♦ If you still want to do something, the best activities are the most relaxing ones: just lay down, read a book, maybe watch some positive easy movie. This kind of pastime should at least be happening during first 1-2 days of your period. The reason for that is because at that time we are losing an incredible amount of energy. So if we take a pill and go do our regular work stuff or run errands, we really only put our future selves into the misery of stress, low energy, and emotional instability throughout the whole entire month. Eventually, occasional low energy will turn into chronic fatigue, if we keep ignoring again and again our sacred alone time of doing nothing.

♦ Visualize and meditate on your purification. There are many beautiful meditations out there to help you with that. One simple thing to do is to visualize how all the negative energy that you don’t need anymore just goes away from your body. It is especially good to do in the shower, imagining how water takes it all away.

♦ Restore. And again, just relax as much as possible. Be passive, lazy and accumulate your energy instead of spending it. Allow yourself that time. Don’t rush to get back on track. The world can wait for you and it won’t end. Better yet, the world will enjoy having you back fully relaxed, purified and glowing.

♦ Stay still and listen. To yourself, to your body, to your mind and to your heart. It is ideal to not work at all and just be present. Just make it a meditation and the cleansing will happen on an even deeper level.

It is a very wise way of Nature to give us, women, a much needed break. All of us usually very much involved in what is going on in the world every day of our life. We participate in everything deeply on all levels – emotional, mental, spiritual and physical. This is our time of complete rest and complete restoration from all that. So what should we avoid doing to help ourselves even more?

What not to do during Moon time

◊ Do not cook. It is forbidden to cook anything during this time. If it is hard, at least during first 2-3 days. Because if we think of the process, we are in the midst of cleansing, right? So we are letting everything out. What happens if we cook while it all goes out? This stuff goes directly into our food, on a energetic level that is. So no one should eat what you cook. And if they do, they’ll feel it. Have mercy on your loved once and avoid cooking during that time.

◊ Do not go out or visit public places. The reason is simple and the same – we are extremely vulnerable energetically and are open to anything, like a an open window. Going to places with other people’s energy will only make the process slower, and make us energetically weaker. We will deplete ourselves very fast and deep. Another more spiritual reason is that we simply have less protection energetically, and are prone to any kind of jinxing or evil thoughts.

◊ Do not go to any holy places, or do anything holy or spiritual. First 3-5 days are considered “dirty” because of the same exact reason you already know – you are cleansing. If you get involved into something holy, this will energetically contaminate the space and things in it. The only holy spiritual thing that can be done is something about menstruation itself – like some Moon circle ritual, or Moon ceremony, or anything of that sort. Doing with other menstruation women is very spiritual, and at the same time very appropriate.

◊ Do not participate in sexual intimacy. For the same reasons, we don’t want to contaminate our men with the negativity that goes out. I will touch more on this subject on Part 2 of this article next time.

◊ Do not create anything new. Avoid creating anything with your hands, from literal art and crafts to fixing anything, doing laundry, participate in some social activities. It is the time of letting go, not letting in or creating new.

Our Moon Time is truly a gift to us. We should treat ourselves with respect, patience and a lot of love during this time. This is our secret to youth, beauty, health, femininity and grace. Being in contact with your cycle, learning what is happening and why is really the best thing we can do to ourselves. This is a special time when every woman is extremely in tune with her intuition and spiritual power. It is the time of a great inner silence that gives us an opportunity to receive answers on just about everything. Treat yourself accordingly, and you will have a lot of energy, healthy beautiful body and many insights and answers.

In Part 2 I will share some Tao secrets and its perspective on this period of time. I will also talk about how our personal cycles are connected with the cycles of the Moon. And of course, I will reveal more information about intimacy during this time.

Love yourself, darlings. ♥♥♥

This is a wonderful question, Iman. Thank you for bringing it up.
Usually, it would be best to ask the partner or husband to help out, if not – other close relative. Women used to live together in communities and they would always take care of each other during those times. So asking another female to help you, sister, mother or cousin, would be ideal. They would for sure understand what you are going through.
If you have an opportunity financially, someone like housekeeper could help. If none of those options are available, the best way to go is to just be easy on yourself and maybe do less than what you normally do, as much as you can. I hope it helps 🙂
